88Situated on the route from Colombo and Kandy , this is one visit that shouldn’t be missed. This Elephant orphanage is run by the wild life department. The department is responsible for rescuing and caring for several abandoned or orphaned baby elephants as well as some who have injuries, and plays an important part in the country’s elephant protection and conservation. Established in 1975 this 25 acre coconut estate provides shelter for the pachyderms and is well maintained with food in abundance. The visitor can participate in feeding the baby elephants and watch them being bathed twice a day in the river. It is a fascinating and unforgettable experience for the Visitor to have such close contact with wild elephants.
