116 mAn ancient capital of Sri Lanka in the 13th-14th century, Kurunegala is still one of our most important towns. It is at a junction of several important destinations. Kurunegala city is ringed by very large rock outcrops which have animal names. The most prominent is the Elephant rock which is about 380 meters tall. Kurenagala is surrounded by Coconut and Rubber plantations and is a commercial hub. There are still some visible foundations of the ancient citadel and fortifications, of which the Temple of the sacred tooth relic is prominent.
