This port city was originally settled by Malay seafarers who used the monsoon winds to crisscross the Indian Ocean .It has an international Airport as well as a modern harbor. It also has an international cricket stadium and conference hall .It has a large fisheries harbor and a vibrant fishing industry. It also has beautiful beaches caressed by the clear blue waters of the surrounding Indian ocean. The areas surrounding are bio-diverse with dry zone scrub jungle with plenty of wild life for the enthusiast, and areas of agriculture. Some farmers still use the old eco-friendly Chena(slash and burn) farming techniques, and releasing the jungles back to nature when they have harvested.
