This city was once the capital city of the ancient Ruhunu Kingdom as far back as the 3rd century B.C. There is very little architectural evidence from this era,but the presence of the Tamil Brahmi script has been discovered.The artificial lake the Tissa weva is one of five surrounding lakes that form an intricate irrigation system that still serves the farming community .Tissamaharama is surrounded by seas of Paddy cultivation ,and is the gateway to Kataragama and Yala.
